Weary of the hustle and bustle of city living, this family opted to swap the centrality of their Sea Point penthouse for the simplicity and tranquillity of a family home in Ruyteplaats Private Mountain Estate.
Set on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles and overlooking Hout Bay Valley, this estate offers an enviable lifestyle in one of the Cape’s most beautiful settings.
As the owner explains, “It is completely surrounded by nature.” As the real hero of this property is the vibrant natural setting, its exterior has a neutral, classic feel. Sizeable windows allow for natural light and enable the plush landscaped garden to be enjoyed from inside the home.
The choice of décor – with vibrant patterns and plenty of texture – helps create a home that is plush, but also relaxed and comfy. “Guests must feel welcome and chilled in our home,” says the owner.
“Second only to the view is the placement of striking pieces of art. These include two sculptures by Louis Chanu and one by Anton Smit at the swimming pool.”
“Guests must feel welcome and chilled in our home.” – the home owner
With such a breathtaking natural backdrop, the view and verdant surroundings are the focal features of this home. Set on one level, the home wraps around the spectacular swimming pool, creating a unique space for family and friends to gather. “In summer we are almost always outside and in the pool.”
Much time is also spent in the open-plan kitchen with its bold colours and ocean and mountain vistas, as well as the playroom with the children. Second only to the view is the placement of striking pieces of art. These include two sculptures by Louis Chanu and one by Anton Smit at the swimming pool.
The designer wanted soft, warm lighting in the home, so JEH Electrical provided bespoke lighting options. In this room, a molecule horizontal mirror pendant creates ambient layering above the bar area, while the K-Light lighting in the living area adds some geometric flair to the living room. JEH Electrical also provided the magnesium and soft aluminium switchgear throughout the home.
Louis Chanu’s innovative sculptures have been gracing homes nationally and internationally for years, serving as both an aesthetic element and an investment. Chanu creates sculptures that absorb and reflect light, depending on the time of day. This illuminated mild steel sculpture, aptly titled Rest, is located next to the pool to complement the natural surroundings.
